My Approach
Artists rarely go on camera without makeup for the simple reason that lighting can have an unflattering impact on our skin, plus ever evolving camera resolutions present aesthetic challenges too and these issues are not exclusive to just actors. The make-up/ grooming first approach is the entertainment industries tried and tested solution.
This approach has numerous upsides; we get to talk and connect before the shoot, you're not thrown straight in front of the camera upon arrival, we can decide on the naturalness or style of your makeup, even a little bit of makeup brings confidence and I can monitor and maintain your look throughout the shoot, bringing continuity in every shot often resulting in images that require less digital retouching. That said the combination of in-camera makeup and subtle digital retouching can be very powerful tools when used in harmony. I retouch my images, leaning into my experience of real world makeup techniques, skin types and light, irrelevant of it being a digital brush and materials, enabling me to control and deliver natural or stylistic looks as required.
For every session I like to offer 'natural daylight'' (weather permitting), a ‘classic’ studio lit headshot, 'the three', which is clean and simple headshots against black, white and a colour and finally what I call ‘something different’, meaning a more creative option that can be used for personal branding or just to show a different side of you; also providing an agent with options should clients ask to see alternative looks. The time spent on the various looks offered depends upon each clients requirements; you can decide to either mix and match or focus on one particular style. I try to shoot with only one client per day, so from the point of your arrival there is no set time limit but I generally find post makeup 3-4 hours is more than enough.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I talk to you before the shoot?
Yes 100% (call, email, FaceTime). I like to go through pictures of a clients intended wardrobe in advance so we can start building looks, lighting, backgrounds and discuss your visual requirements. Also happy to explore mood boards with you in advance or we can just get creative together.
I shoot tethered during the session and encourage an open collaboration between us in order to get the shots you require. I will make you look your best, get a performance and capture YOU.
Note: I recommend actors seeking headshots to discuss with their agent their requirements and whether my style suits.
■
Can I do my own makeup?
Absolutely, if that's what you'd prefer and I’ll be there to step in and tweak something if needed.
■
Retouching.
I do my own retouching, bringing my real world make-up skills to the digital space, complimenting the in-camera look we achieve together and dealing with things like blemishes, grading and cropping in making your images pop.
■
When will I get my pictures?
You will receive access to a secure online gallery of your shots (within 24 hours) where you can make your selections. Once selections are made I aim to deliver final images between 7-10 days.
■
Can I have all the images from the shoot?
You will receive the 10 final retouched images (+ black and white versions upon request). I keep backups for 36 months should you need to recover lost files or want to revisit the same shoot.
■
Do you do all types of headshot?
Yes I shoot all types of headshot; actors, editorial, groups, out and about, all walks of life. I offer French, American styles, black and white, natural daylight and studio light.
■
How do I get to you and where do you shoot?
I shoot at my home studio in Buckinghamshire. The quickest route is a 20 minute train journey from London Marylebone to Gerrards Cross train station where I will pick you up and return you post the shoot. Alternatively tube to Amersham Underground station or you can drive and I have off road parking.
■
Do I need to bring anything?
Just you and your wardrobe, with options and accessories. Your shaving equipment if you want a variation on facial hair through your shoot, although I also have everything here if required. We will bridge lunch with the booking so bring a bite to eat. Coffee, Tea and Snacks are always around, let me know if you have milk preferences!
■
How do I pay?
Bank transfer or cash on the day. Payment for your session must be settled in full prior to your shoot date, unless you're paying cash on the day.
■
Deposit + Rescheduling + Cancellation:
I require a deposit of £25. This will be deducted from the full price of the session. Should you cancel less than two days before the shoot, you forfeit your deposit. If you wish to re-schedule your booking then your original deposit will be carried over if that appointment is made with 4 weeks of the original booking and again I ask for 2 days notice of any change. Any refund of the deposit for any other reasons will be at the photographers discretion.
